Frequently Asked questions
Quick answers on ATO car logbooks, the cents per km rate, and how CarSavvy tracks your trips.
CarSavvy is an Australian car logbook app that tracks your work trips automatically, captures receipts with AI, and builds tax reports for the logbook or cents per km method. It also reminds you about rego, servicing and insurance. It's built for tradies, rideshare and delivery drivers, NDIS workers, sales reps and small businesses, with a Forever Free plan.
The ATO doesn't approve or endorse any logbook app, including CarSavvy. What matters is that your logbook records what the ATO requires: each work trip's purpose, destination, odometer readings and kilometres, over at least 12 continuous weeks. CarSavvy records these details for every trip so your logbook is complete and easy to hand to your accountant.
With Drive detection on, CarSavvy notices when you start driving and records the trip in the background, so you never press start or stop. It uses your phone's location (set to Always) and Motion & Fitness sensors. Car audio detection checks your car's Bluetooth or wired audio to pick the right car and skip trips as a passenger. Then swipe right for Business or left for Personal.
You can also start a trip yourself, record a whole rideshare or delivery shift as one entry, or add a manual entry for a trip you forgot. Tracking rules can sort trips automatically, for example Business on weekdays 9 to 5.
Your logbook must cover at least 12 continuous weeks that represent your usual work travel, and it can then be used for up to 5 years. For each work trip, record the purpose, destination, start and end odometer readings, and kilometres. Also record the odometer readings at the start and end of the logbook period and the total kilometres. Start a new logbook if your work travel changes, for example with a new job or home.
The cents per km rate for the 2026–27 financial year (1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027) is 91 cents per kilometre. You can claim up to 5,000 work kilometres per car, a maximum deduction of $4,550. The 2025–26 rate was 88 cents. The rate covers all running costs, including fuel, rego, insurance and depreciation.
If you drive more than 5,000 work kilometres a year, or your car costs a lot to run, the logbook method often gives a bigger deduction. It lets you claim your work-use percentage of actual car expenses. Cents per km is simpler: no logbook or receipts, but it's capped at 5,000 km. A tax agent can confirm which suits you.
