Questions about expense tracking
The logbook method has two parts. Your 12-week logbook gives you a business-use percentage: work kilometres divided by total kilometres. You then apply that percentage to your total car expenses for the year. For example, if your logbook shows 60% business use and your car cost $10,000 to run, you can claim $6,000. That's why you need to record your expenses as well as your trips.
The whole year. Your 12-week logbook sets your business-use percentage, but you apply it to every car expense you pay across the financial year. Keep receipts for rego, insurance, servicing, repairs, tyres, loan interest and lease payments. For fuel, keep receipts or estimate from your odometer readings. In each later year you use the logbook, keep the same records plus your odometer readings at the start and end of the year.
If you use your own car for work, you can claim the work-use share of what it costs to own and run it: fuel and oil, servicing and repairs, rego, insurance, interest on a car loan, lease payments and the car's decline in value. You claim these with the logbook method. Under the cents per km method, the rate covers them instead. Work parking and tolls are claimed separately.
Tap the plus button, then Quick Capture, and choose the document type: fuel receipt, service invoice, rego papers, insurance document, fine or other car expense. Scan it or upload a photo, up to four pages. CarSavvy's AI reads the date, amount and vehicle, then you check the details and save them to your Expense Journal. For fuel receipts, add an odometer photo so the reading is saved with your fill-up.
Yes. Go to your Garage, tap your car, then Expenses. Tap the three dots, then Export. Choose the tax year or a custom date range and which expenses to include. CarSavvy emails you a CSV report, ready to send to your tax agent or bookkeeper.
Generally, yes. The ATO accepts digital copies of receipts, as long as the copy is clear and shows the supplier, the amount, the date and what you bought. The ATO doesn't approve or endorse any app, CarSavvy included, so check anything unusual with your tax agent.
Yes, with the cents per km method. The rate already covers fuel, rego, insurance, servicing and depreciation, so you don't need receipts for those, but you can't claim them separately either. You still need records showing that you own or lease the car, how you used it for work, and how you worked out your kilometres. Keep receipts for work parking and tolls, which you claim separately.
Yes. CarSavvy's Forever Free plan includes expense tracking, AI receipt scanning, tax reports and up to 5 cars. Basic adds unlimited trip tracking for $6 a month ($5.10 a month billed annually), and Premium adds up to 10 cars for $12 a month ($10.20 billed annually).
