Everything you need to know about reporting
Each report covers one car. Every trip is listed with its date, start and end times and addresses, reason, kilometres, whether it was business or personal, and odometer readings where you entered them. At the bottom, the report totals your business and personal kilometres, shows your business-use percentage and adds up the cents per km value of your business trips. Add a reason to every business trip, because the ATO asks for the purpose of each work journey.
For trips, open the Trips tab, go to Overview and tap Export. For expenses, go to your Garage, tap your car, then Expenses, tap the three dots and Export, then choose the tax year or a custom date range. Both come as CSV files you can send to your tax agent, bookkeeper or employer.
Divide your business kilometres by your total kilometres for the 12-week logbook period, then multiply by 100. For example, 6,000 business km out of 10,000 total km is 60%. You then claim 60% of your car expenses for the year. CarSavvy works this out for you: your trip report shows your total business and personal kilometres and your business-use percentage.
No. An app records the same details a logbook template asks for (the date, purpose, odometer readings and kilometres for each trip) without typing them into a spreadsheet. If you'd rather keep a paper or Excel logbook, you can download our free template.
Yes. Each trip report covers one car, so if you drive more than one for work, you get a separate logbook for each. If you use the logbook method for more than one car, the ATO says to keep a logbook for each car, covering the same period.
Yes. Enter your odometer reading when you start and end a trip or shift, or add a photo of your odometer with a fuel receipt. The ATO needs odometer readings at the start and end of your logbook period, and at the start and end of each later year you use it.
Yes. Export a CSV of your work trips for the period and send it to payroll or your manager. Your employer sets the reimbursement rate. Some use the ATO's cents per km rate as a guide (91 cents for 2026–27), but that rate is for tax deductions, not a rule for reimbursements.
Yes. Trip and expense tax reports are part of the Forever Free plan, along with up to 5 cars and 15 trip entries a month. Basic adds unlimited trip tracking for $6 a month ($5.10 a month billed annually).
